Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM)
is a driver-assistance safety feature designed to detect vehicles in
the driver's blind spots and alert them to potential collisions when
changing lanes.
How It Works (Simple Breakdown):
Detection: Sensors (usually radar,
sometimes cameras) mounted in the rear bumper or side mirrors
continuously scan the areas alongside and slightly behind your vehicle.
Analysis: A computer processes the sensor data to determine if another vehicle is present in the blind spot zone.
Alert: The system provides a warning to the driver, typically through:
Visual Alert: A small icon (often an amber light) illuminates in or near the corresponding side mirror or A-pillar.
Enhanced Alert (if turning):
If the driver activates the turn signal while a vehicle is in the blind
spot, the warning usually intensifies (e.g., the icon flashes and/or an
audible beep or steering wheel vibration occurs).
